Solec International initially produced solar cells using reclaimed Westark material from the semiconductor industry in the early 1980s. The front and back pattern designs of these cells were then modified. These changes reflected the ongoing research collaboration between Solec International and Westark Inc., which focused on adapting the solar cell design to the higher resistivity of semiconductor-grade silicon. The back pattern, in particular, was adjusted to accommodate the full range of semiconductor wafers.
